CELEBRATING INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY

Released on February 28, 2003

Throughout the month of March women's groups from across the province are holding a wide variety of events in recognition of International Women's Day (IWD) – March 8th.

"March will provide many opportunities for Saskatchewan residents to celebrate women and what they mean to families, communities and society," Minister Responsible for the Status of Women Deb Higgins said. "International Women's Day is a key date for women worldwide. It is an opportunity to celebrate women's achievements, to reflect on challenges that still lie ahead, and to renew commitments to equality."

Many of the events are made possible through an IWD grant program sponsored by Saskatchewan Labour's Status of Women Office.

"In the third consecutive year of the grant program, 89 community-based organizations have been provided grants to assist in hosting IWD events," Higgins said. "These events provide groups with an opportunity to profile who they are and the work they do, honour women leaders, role models and volunteers in their communities, and promote increased awareness of women's equality issues."

Activities include educational panels and workshops on women's issues such as violence against women, multiculturalism, immigration, and education; speakers on women's health, leadership, empowerment and disability issues; as well as a number of awards ceremonies.

For a listing of events for IWD you can access the Women's Secretariat's web site at http://www.swo.gov.sk.ca/heard.html.
