PST REBATE ON NEW ENERGY EFFICIENT APPLIANCES

Released on December 18, 2003

Consumers now have a further incentive to purchase energy efficient appliances with a new program announced today. Building on its commitment to grow a green and prosperous economy, the government is implementing a Provincial Sales Tax Rebate for Energy Star compliant appliances.

"This is just one case where protecting the environment goes hand in hand with protecting your pocketbook," Minister responsible for the Office of Energy Conservation David Forbes said. "By making it easier for consumers to make a wise purchase, we are also helping them to save on energy bills and giving them an opportunity to actively get involved in reducing greenhouse gas emissions."

Energy Star compliant refrigerators, freezers, clothes washers, and dishwashers purchased on or after October 1st, 2003 are eligible for the new program. The program, a part of the government's Green Agenda, is designed to encourage consumers to reduce their energy usage, making smart choices that benefit both the economy and the environment.

Eligible appliances, easily identified by the Energy Star Logo, have passed through a strict set of criteria that guarantees they use at least ten percent less energy than standard models. Consumers can find more information on Energy Star, along with a list of eligible appliances, at the Energy Star website at: www.oee.nrcan.gc.ca/energystar.

The Department of Finance will administer the program. Consumers can download information and an application from the department website at: www.gov.sk.ca/finance or call the department at 1-800-667-6102 or in Regina at 787-6645.
