The provincial government is looking for comments on its proposed
Biodiversity Action Plan, which focuses on conserving the province's
environment.
"Biological diversity is the source of natural wealth for this province,"
Environment Minister Buckley Belanger said. "Healthy soil, productive
forests and grasslands and clean air and water are some of the benefits of
a healthy environment. If we manage these resources wisely they will
continue to support us. The cost of fixing environmental problems in the
future, assuming that we can, will be more expensive than acting now to
conserve biodiversity."
Biodiversity includes all species of plants and animals and how they
interact with and rely on one another for survival and interact with their
environment. The challenge is to find a balance between conserving
biodiversity and making use of our natural resources.
Saskatchewan's Biodiversity Action Plan is intended to build on the
nationally developed Canadian Biodiversity Strategy and on the actions of
industry and individuals. It focuses on what governments can do to make
sure that we conserve biodiversity and use biological resources in a
sustainable manner.
The plan, "Caring for Saskatchewan's Natural Environments: A Proposed
Biodiversity Action Plan" is available for review. The public is invited
to submit written comments on the report by December 30th, 2002.
Throughout November, several public information meetings will be held
across the province.
Meeting dates are: Regina, November 5th; Saskatoon, November 6th; Prince
Albert, November 13th, and LaRonge, November 14th. Advertisements will be
posted in local newspapers inviting public participation. The Biodiversity
Action Plan and a questionnaire are also available on the Saskatchewan
Environment website at: www.serm.gov.sk.ca/ecosystem/biodiversity/index.htm
