WOMEN ENTREPRENEURS RECOGNIZED
Released on May 3, 2002
Saskatchewan's businesswomen are a driving force in our provincial economy,
and their contributions will once again be celebrated during the annual
Women Entrepreneurs Week, May 5th to 11th.
Women make up more than 30 per cent of Saskatchewan's entrepreneurs, and
their businesses employ nearly 90,000 people across the province.
"Saskatchewan's businesswomen are making their mark in every sector, from
pulse crops to trucking to digital communications," Industry and Resources
Minister Eldon Lautermilch said. "By starting their own businesses and
forging their own paths, these women are creating new jobs and prosperity
for our province."
"Women entrepreneurs are making a real contribution to building a strong,
dynamic provincial economy," Minister Responsible for the Status of Women
Deb Higgins said. "Women Entrepreneurs Week reminds us a thriving economy
depends upon the efficiency and co-operation of everyone, women and men,
and provides an opportunity to recognize the many achievements of
Saskatchewan's women entrepreneurs."
The highlight of the week is the annual Women Entrepreneurs of Saskatchewan
Inc. Business Symposium in Regina May 10th. The federally funded, non-
profit organization fosters business development among women, providing
business advisory services, training and mentorship opportunities.
"Our organization greatly appreciates the recognition the province has
given to the contribution of women entrepreneurs through the recognition of
this week," Executive Director for Women Entrepreneurs of Saskatchewan
Laura Small said.
Over the past six years, Women Entrepreneurs Inc. has lent over $5 million
to new and existing businesses, which has resulted in the creation of over
350 full-time jobs.
