INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY GRANTS

Released on February 15, 2002

The Provincial Government is helping 102 Saskatchewan community-based

organizations host a variety of activities and events in celebration of

International Women's Day (IWD) on March 8th. Activities will occur

throughout the month of March.

"Saskatchewan organizations have been provided with grants of $500 in order

to profile an issue that impacts women, raise awareness about IWD and its

significance, and highlight the important work of the host organizations

that contribute so much to our quality of life in Saskatchewan," Minister

Responsible for the Status of Women Judy Junor said.

March 8th is celebrated as International Women's Day around the world. It

is a time to celebrate women's economic and social achievements and reflect

on the challenges that still lie ahead. The theme chosen for this year's

IWD grant program is "The Diversity of Women".

"These grants provide groups and the community with an opportunity to

recognize the contributions women have made to Saskatchewan and to discuss

issues that affect their communities," Junor added. "I encourage the

public to attend events organized around the province."

Activities range from educational workshops on issues such as family

violence and poverty, to discussions on disability issues, and awards

ceremonies.

Non-profit community-based groups whose primary mandate is to provide

services to women or work toward equality for women were eligible. Groups

from Buffalo Narrows to Hudson Bay to Estevan received grants.

For a listing of events for IWD you can access the Women's Secretariat's

Web site at www.womensec.gov.sk.ca/Events.html.
