NEW REPORT ON VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN IN CANADA

Released on December 3, 2002

A new report was released today by the Canadian Minsiters Responsible for

the Status of Women to highlight December 6th - the National Day of

Rememberence for the Status of Women.

Developed by Statistics Canada, Assessing Violence Against Women: A

Statistical Profile examines the prevalence and severity of violence

against women as defined under the Criminal Code.

"Violence against women is a serious and complex social issue that requires

a comprehensive, integrated response," Minister Responsible for the Status

of Women Deb Higgins said. "The provincial government is working in

partnership with communities, families and individuals to foster family

relationships free of violence and abuse."

"This report will be a valuable tool in measuring changes in violence

patterns and will help determine the effectiveness of existing violence

prevention and protection programs and services," Higgins said. "Our

entire society will benefit from a reduction in domestic violence."

Provincial violence prevention and protection initiatives include

legislation such as The Victims of Domestic Violence Act and the recent

Emergency Protection for Victims of Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation

Act. Those initiatives also include, funding of projects through the Child

Action Plan, school curriculum developments, crisis housing, funding of

transition houses and sexual assault centers and Alternatives to Violence

programs for abusers.
