LA RONGE AIRPORT LIGHTS UP

Released on June 8, 2001

The airside lighting systems at the La Ronge Airport are about to be

rehabilitated to improve safety at this northern airport.

"This $700,000 project, which is administered by our department and funded

by Transport Canada under the Airport Capital Assistance Program, is

anticipated to begin this week and should be completed by August," Highways

and Transportation Minister Pat Atkinson said. "Completion of this job

will require an estimated 10 full-time workers."

The lighting system will enhance visibility on the runways and aprons

located at this airport through the upgrading and installation of

floodlights, lighting control systems and an edge light system.

"The La Ronge Airport needs some extensive improvements in order to enhance

safety and operations," Atkinson said. "We are pleased the federal

government is helping to provide funding that will help to rehabilitate our

major northern airport."

Janus Projects Ltd. was awarded the lighting rehabilitation project as the

lowest of five bidders.

In addition to the lighting project, the airport will also be resurfaced

under a separate contract to Carmacks Enterprises Ltd. The resurfacing

will begin in mid-June and should be completed in September at a cost of

approximately $4 million. This funding is provided under the Airport

Capital Assistance program (ACAP).
