SINGLE PARENT SCHOLARSHIPS ANNOUNCED

Released on October 23, 2000

Ten well-deserving single-parent moms who are continuing their education in

post-secondary programs, will each receive a $1,000 debt-reduction scholarship

from the Saskatchewan Women's Secretariat.

"We know education is the most important way out of poverty for women,"

Minister Responsible for the Status of Women Joanne Crofford said.

"We also know single-parent women are one of the most economically

disadvantaged groups and are among those with the highest debt load following

completion of their studies. That is why the Secretariat decided to support

single-parent women with its millennium initiative."

The Secretariat offered these scholarships to single-parent moms who

demonstrated a strong desire to improve their lives and the lives of their

children, as well as take what they had learned back into their community.

"There were many well-deserving applicants," Crofford said. "These women show

incredible commitment, tenacity and determination."

Criteria used to determine scholarship recipients included student need,

geographic location, representation from all equity groups and individual

achievement. MOM Scholarship recipients are: Sandra Hubenig, Yorkton; Brenda

Stephenson, Regina; Debbie Edwards, Regina; Connie Power, Regina; Ruth Driedger-

Neufeldt, Saskatoon; Raymonde Joyes, Vonda; Susan Cox, Prince Albert; Deborah

Palmer, Prince Albert; Geraldine Coolidge, Lashburn and Gladys McDonald, Prince

Albert.
