To promote the elimination of violence against women, Saskatchewan people areurged to wear purple ribbons in recognition of Purple Ribbon Awareness Week –
May 14 to 20.
The Purple Ribbon Awareness Week commemorates Saskatchewan women who have died
by acts of violence by their partners. It also promotes awareness and
encourages community support for ending violence.
"The Government of Saskatchewan's commitment to end violence against women and
family violence is evident through its work with communities, families and
individuals," Minister Responsible for the Status of Women Joanne Crofford
said. "We have worked with community partners to develop a range of integrated
services to address the needs of those who are experiencing family violence."
These services include shelters, crisis centres, sexual assault counsellors,
innovative legislation, programs for batterers and education in schools.
"Even as we celebrate Mother's Day, let us recognize that not all families are
safe havens. Let us honour women who have died due to family violence and wear
a purple ribbon to remember those wives, sisters, daughters, cousins, aunts,
mothers and grandmothers and friends," Saskatchewan Battered Women's Advocacy
Network Coordinator Julie Johnson said.
