Sexual Assault Awareness Week

Released on March 28, 2000

Prevention of sexual assault and abuse through raising awareness is the aim of

Sexual Assault Awareness Week, April 2nd to 8th.

"Raising awareness and educating the public are key if we are to continue

building the climate in Saskatchewan communities that ensures children and

women are safe and no longer at risk," Minister Responsible for the Status of

Women Joanne Crofford said .

According to a 1999 Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics report, women are at

significantly higher risk of sexual assault than men. In fact, 1 out of every

4 women is sexually assaulted at some point in their lives. Furthermore, 60

per cent of sexual abuse and assault victims are children and youth. In

particular, girls were identified as being at higher risk of sexual assault by

a family member.

"We are all members of the same community and when one person is harmed, it

affects us all. Proclamation of Sexual Assault Awareness Week serves to remind

us of the role we all have to play in demanding that violence in any form is

stopped," Justice Minister Chris Axworthy said.

"During this week, member agencies will raise public awareness through forums,

workshops and various activities that will highlight available programs and

services," Sexual Assault Services of Saskatchewan Co-ordinator Dawn McCarthy

said.
