'MOMS ON THE MOVE' SCHOLARSHIPS

Released on March 7, 2000

Ten Saskatchewan women are being offered a stepping stone to a brighter future

through a series of scholarships.

Moms on the Move (M.O.M.) is awarding 10, $1,000 scholarships to single-parent

women who have successfully completed one year of full-time post-secondary

study and want to continue their second year of education.

Minister responsible for the status of women Joanne Crofford made the

announcement in celebration of International Women's Day.

"Education is an important step towards a brighter future for women and their

families," Crofford said, "Single-parent women are the heads of most single-

parent families. Single-parent women are also one of the most economically

disadvantaged groups and are among those with the highest debt load."

A M.O.M. scholarship is specifically designed to reduce a student loan debt.

If the debt is less than the scholarship amount, the student will receive the

difference by cheque. If the recipient does not have a student loan, the

student will receive the whole amount by cheque.

"International Women's Day, March 8, is a time to celebrate women's

achievements and renew our commitment to equality, whether in government or

community," Crofford said.

M.O.M. scholarships are being administered by the Saskatchewan Women's

Secretariat. The application deadline is June 30, 2000. Application forms

will be available after March 31, 2000 from the Women's Secretariat at (306)

787-7401 or any post-secondary educational institute in Saskatchewan. M.O.M.

scholarships are a one-time initiative.
