FOSSIL RESEARCH STATION FOR EASTEND

Released on June 5, 2000

The Royal Saskatchewan Museum will establish a scientific research station in

the recently built T. rex Centre at Eastend.

The government has signed a deal with the Eastend Community Tourism Authority

relocating and expanding the Museum's Fossil Research Station in the new

centre.

"The museum will conduct fossil research, collection and preservation

activities from the T. rex Centre and assist with the centre's exhibits,

education and interpretive programs," Municipal Affairs, Culture and Housing

Minister Clay Serby said. "We look forward to being part of the new centre,

protecting the rich fossil resources of southwest Saskatchewan for future

generations while providing educational and tourism opportunities."

In addition to the museum's involvement, the Government of Saskatchewan has

provided a $1.2 million dollar capital grant to match contributions raised by

the community. SaskEnergy has contributed $300,000 for educational programming.

"The agreement we are signing today will allow the T. rex Centre to have a

sustainable partnership with the Royal Saskatchewan Museum," Eastend Community

Tourism Authority Chair Larry Stork said. "The expertise and resources this

agreement brings to the centre will have a long lasting effect on tourism,

fossil collecting and preservation in southwest Saskatchewan."

The 15,000 square foot T. rex Centre is situated on the north slope of the

Frenchman River Valley overlooking the town of Eastend. It features a 3,800

square foot exhibit area, a 98-seat theatre, a gift shop and an educational

activity area in addition to fossil preparation labs and offices.

While the T. rex Centre will not officially open until spring 2001, the public

is invited to visit the centre this summer to view temporary exhibits and to

participate in a variety of educational and interpretive programs.
