"WOMEN ARE PERSONS" EXHIBIT AT LEGISLATURE

Released on February 11, 2000

A tribute to the five Canadian women responsible for the success of the

Person's Case of 1929 was officially launched today at the Legislative Building

in Regina.

The "Famous Five" made history by challenging the Supreme Court of Canada

ruling that women were not "persons" under the British North America Act.

"The Person's Case was a pivotal event which laid the foundation for

improvements in the social and political equality of all women across Canada,"

Minister responsible for the Status of Women Joanne Crofford said. "It seems

long overdue that we should commemorate these five women and the significance

of their achievement."

The Famous Five Exhibit will be on display at the Legislative Building until

Friday, March 3rd and profiles Emily Murphy, Henrietta Muir Edwards, Louise

McKinney, Irene Parlby and Nellie McClung.
