Saskatchewan has set a new record for the number of people working in theprovince, breaking the mark set only a month earlier.
Job figures released today by Statistics Canada show 498,600 people working in
Saskatchewan in July 2000, beating the previous record set in June.
"These record numbers are a testament to the strength of our diversified
economy," Economic and Co-operative Development Minister Janice MacKinnon
said. "Our economy is creating new jobs across most sectors, and we're
particularly gratified in the continued increase in the number of full-time
jobs for Saskatchewan people."
The Saskatchewan economy has created an average of 12,400 full-time jobs in the
first seven months of 2000, compared to the previous year. Year over year, the
number of people working full-time increased by 5,400 from July 1999 to July
2000.
Saskatchewan's unemployment rate of 5.8 per cent in July 2000 was basically
unchanged (a decline of 0.4 per cent) from the previous year. The rate was
well below the national average of 7.0 per cent.
Regina had the second lowest unemployment rate among major Canadian cities at
5.3 per cent in July 2000.
"While our job numbers fluctuate from month to month, they continue to track
well in 2000," MacKinnon said. "Our economy's strong jobs performance
indicates a bright future for the people of Saskatchewan."
