Released on November 29, 1999
Saskatoon lawyer and mediator Daniel Hamoline received a Queen's Counsel (QC)
appointment on November 23, 1999. He passed away November 25.
"Dan Hamoline was a leader in the development of mediation and alternative
dispute resolution in the Saskatchewan legal profession," Justice Minister
Chris Axworthy said. "It is important that he be recognized for his significant
contributions to the practise of law in our province."
Prior to attending law school, Hamoline was a social worker with Saskatchewan
Social Services. He earned a law degree from the University of Saskatchewan in
1981, articling at the Battlefords and Area Legal Services Society. Hamoline
was admitted to the bar in 1982.
He then worked as a mediator for several years and began practising law again
in 1986. Hamoline has set up mediation training courses that are approved by
the Law Society of Saskatchewan and Mediation Services, Saskatchewan Justice.
The letters QC are added to the lawyer's name and the designation is an honour
given to distinguished lawyers. They must live in Saskatchewan and have
practiced law in superior courts a minimum of 10 years in any province or
territory of Canada or the United Kingdom and Ireland.
Lawyers who get a QC designation have been recommended by a selection committee
comprised of Saskatchewan's Minister of Justice, the Chief Justice of the Court
of Queen's Bench for Saskatchewan or the Chief Justice Court of Appeal (on an
alternating basis) and the past presidents of the Saskatchewan branch of the
Canadian Bar Association and the Law Society of Saskatchewan.
