LA LOCHE COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT CORPORATION RECEIVES INTERNET ACCESS AND TRAINING GRANT

Released on January 18, 1999

Buckley Belanger, MLA for the Athabasca Constituency, on behalf of

Joanne Crofford, minister responsible for the Status of Women, today

presented the La Loche Community Development Corporation with a grant

to enable them to access the Internet and train members to use the new

communications technologies.

The La Loche Community Development Corporation will receive $10,000

from the Women's Organizations On Line Program, an initiative of the

Saskatchewan Women's Secretariat.

"This program will strengthen the ability of community groups to deal

with pressing issues such as poverty, unemployment and family

violence," Belanger said.

"This funding will open new doors for our organization, clients and

members," La Loche Community Development Corporation Manager Wendy

Lemaigre said. "Living in a remote northern community, we have

limited access to the technology and training available to larger

centres. We will benefit greatly from the advantages of the new

information technologies such as being able to link with other

groups and being able to quickly access up-to-date information."

The majority of groups who have received funding through the

Women's Organizations On Line Program, provide support and

services to lower income women, First Nations or Metis women,

rural or northern women, visible minority and immigrant women and

women who are victims of violence.

The La Loche Community Development Corporation, through a variety

of preventative and supportive programs designed to strengthen

families, works to ensure the well-being of children, women,

adults and elders living in La Loche.
