Released on February 24, 1999
Joanne Crofford, minister responsible for the Status of Women, today
released a new publication entitled Sexual Harassment: A Guide for
Complainants. The guide will assist individuals seeking to resolve
situations of sexual harassment in the workplace by providing clear
and concise information about the options and processes available to
them.
"It is essential that we create and maintain safe work environments
for all employees," Crofford said. "The guide will be a helpful
resource for individuals who are experiencing sexual harassment as
well as for those who are supporting them."
The guide was developed as a response to the need expressed by
complainants and service providers for additional information about
dealing with sexual harassment. Complainants and community-based
organizations participated by providing input to the guide.
Sexual harassment continues to be a workplace problem that
predominantly affects women. The release of this guide is in
anticipation of International Women's Day, which is celebrated
annually on March 8 to commemorate the work women have done to achieve
justice and equality.
Sexual harassment is prohibited under Saskatchewan's Occupational
Health and Safety Act, which was the first legislation of its
kind in Canada. As well, the Saskatchewan Human Rights Code
includes sexual harassment as a form of discrimination based on
sex.
