Joanne Crofford, minister responsible for the Status of Women, today
presented $27,000 in grants to three Regina women's and community
organizations working with people with disabilities. These grants
will enable the groups to access the Internet and train members to use
the new communications technologies.
The groups will receive the funds from the Women's Organizations
On Line Program, an initiative of the Saskatchewan Women's
Secretariat. These groups join other groups around the province who
have received additional funds to ensure accessibility of technology
by people with disabilities.
"This program will strengthen the ability of community groups to deal
with pressing issues such as poverty, unemployment and family
violence," Crofford said. "These organizations will be able to link
with other groups more effectively and meet the needs of their clients
and members more efficiently."
The majority of groups receiving funding provide support and services
to women with disabilities, lower income women, First Nations or Metis
women, rural or northern women, visible minority and immigrant women
and women who are victims of violence.
Crofford noted that at a recent Internet symposium for
Saskatchewan women, keynote speaker and President of Meta
Strategies Inc. Liz Rykert stated that this program is in the
forefront in Canada and that Saskatchewan is leading the way for
other provinces and territories.
"This grant will help women with disabilities network, access
information and research, and save on time and cost," Crofford
said. "We look forward to Saskatchewan women and women's
organizations' strong presence online locally, nationally and
internationally."
