GOVERNMENT CUTTING RED TAPE FOR BUSINESS

Released on March 19, 1998

Economic and Co-operative Development Minister Janice MacKinnon today

said she is pleased the 1998-99 provincial budget supports the

government's commitment to reduce the paper burden for small business.

"In addition to reducing and simplifying regulations, small business

has asked us to reduce their paperwork burden," MacKinnon said. "The

Department of Finance is now changing the filing requirements so that

more businesses will be able to remit sales tax returns on a quarterly

or annual basis.

"This one measure from just one department will reduce the paperwork

for over 4,000 small businesses. It's an important example to other

government departments and agencies," MacKinnon said.

In addition, the departments of Finance, Justice, Workers Compensation

Board and Economic and Co-operative Development are currently working

in partnership to develop a pilot one-stop business registration

system that would further reduce the paper burden for small

businesses.

"We will soon be operating a pilot project that will provide

electronic registration for starting a new business and reduce the

number of government agencies an entrepreneur has to go to in order to

get registered," MacKinnon said.
