APPOINTMENTS TO SASKATCHEWAN POLICE COMMISSION ANNOUNCED

Justice Minister John Nilson today announced the appointments to the
Saskatchewan Police Commission. Nancy Hopkins, Q.C. is appointed as
chair, Frank Flegel and Bernice Sayese are appointed as members and
Barry Singer, Q.C. is re-appointed as vice-chair.
"The role of the Saskatchewan Police Commission is important to
achieving our government's goal of a fair, equitable and safe society
supported by a justice system that is trusted and understood," Nilson
said. "I am very pleased to announce these appointments. These four
individuals bring a wealth of experience to their roles as members of
the Commission."
The Saskatchewan Police Commission is responsible for regulating and
establishing uniform standards for the municipal police services in
Saskatchewan. The Commission also operates the Saskatchewan Police
College, with offices and classrooms located at the University of
Regina.
The Commission hears appeals from discipline and dismissal cases
involving members of municipal police services.
The Commission promotes efficiency and improving police relations
in the community through audits and reviews of Saskatchewan's 17
municipal police services and through visits to police services
around the province.

APPOINTMENTS TO THE SASKATCHEWAN POLICE COMMISSION
Nancy Hopkins, Q.C.
Chair
Nancy Hopkins is a senior partner with Gauley and Company in their Saskatoon office. In addition to active involvement in the legal community and the Saskatoon community, she has served as a hearing officer under The Police Act, 1990 for several years. She received her Queen's Counsel designation in 1992.
Barry Singer, Q.C.
Vice-chair
Mr. Singer has been a member of the Saskatchewan bar since 1976. His primary areas of practice are family and criminal law. He is a past Bencher of the Law Society of Saskatchewan, a member of the Saskatchewan Trial Lawyers Association, director of the criminal bar portion of the bar course and a past-president of the Saskatoon Bar
Association. He received his Queen's Counsel designation in 1995.
Frank Flegel
Member
Mr. Flegel is a member and past president of the Saskatchewan Crime Stoppers Board. He is currently the Director of Communications at the University of Regina. Prior to this he was a broadcast journalist for more than 25 years. He is also an active community volunteer.
Bernice Sayese
Member
Ms. Sayese is a community development officer with the City of Prince Albert. She was a member of the Mayor's Task Force on Race Relations in Prince Albert.
