GOVERNMENT PROVIDES FUNDS FOR CHILD NUTRITION PROGRAMS

Released on January 16, 1998

Lloydminster MLA Violet Stanger, on behalf of Social Services Minister

Lorne Calvert, today announced funding for before-school snack

programs at Neville Goss and Father Gorman schools in Lloydminster.

Funding for these programs is provided under the Child Nutrition and

Development Grant Program.

"I am very pleased that we are able to provide assistance to these

very worthwhile projects," Stanger said. "This type of funding is

part of the government's ongoing commitment to enhancing the

well-being of Saskatchewan children and their families."

Neville Goss and Father Gorman schools will receive a total of $12,600

to continue to provide the Healthy Snack Program which has already

proven to be successful. Reports indicate that students involved in

the programs are more willing to work and participate in class and

better able to focus on their studies. This has resulted in an

overall improvement in school performance.

Funding for these projects is provided through the Saskatchewan Action

Plan for Children. In 1997/98, more than $24 million was targeted to

programs for children and families under the award-winning Action

Plan. The Child Nutrition and Development Program provides support to

schools and community organizations to develop local nutrition and

development programs.

For this fiscal year, the ongoing budget for this program was

increased by $200,000 to $1.2 million. A further $500,000 was

earmarked in this year's budget to provide one-time grants to

support the development of self-sufficiency projects such as

community kitchens and gardens.

"Our children are our future," Stanger said. "What we do for

them today will have a significant impact on the quality of that

future. I want to commend these schools and the community of

Lloydminster for working together to plan and develop these

projects. Their commitment to children will help ensure a

brighter future for all of us."
