NORTHERN WOMEN'S GROUPS RECEIVE INTERNET ACCESS AND TRAINING GRANTS

Released on April 17, 1998

Northern Affairs Minister Keith Goulet, on behalf of Judy Bradley,

minister responsible for the Status of Women, today presented four

northern women's organizations with $34,000 in grants to enable them

to access the Internet and train members to use the new communications

technologies.

The Women's Organizations On Line Program, an initiative of the

Saskatchewan Women's Secretariat, will provide $7,000 to the La Ronge

Native Women's Council; $9,000 to the Prince Albert Grand Council

Women's Commissions in Lac La Ronge; $9,000 to Pelican Narrows; and

$9,000 to Black Lake.

"This funding will enable these organizations to network more easily,

access information more quickly and serve the needs of their members

more effectively," Goulet said.

The La Ronge Native Women's Council provides support and services to

Aboriginal women. The Council operates a shelter for battered women

and their children and coordinates education and training programs.

The Prince Albert Grand Council Women's Commissions work to promote

the social, economic and political status of First Nations women in

their respective communities.
