$775,000 INVESTED IN SKILLS TRAINING FOR WOMEN

Released on March 24, 1997

Joanne Crofford, minister responsible for the Status of Women announced
today that the government will invest $775,000 over the next two years
to provide specialized computer training for women.

The Women's Secretariat will provide funding for non-profit
organizations to provide women with hands-on training and skill
development in using a computer and accessing new technology such as
internet.

Non-profit organizations that provide services primarily to women will
be eligible for assistance to develop and deliver the training. Special
consideration will be given to organizations in rural and northern
areas and organizations that target women with disabilities or women of
a visible minority.

"This program will help women to ensure they have the skills needed to
break into a job market in which these skills are in great demand.
Those jobs that require these new technological skills are also well
paying and provide better benefits," Crofford said.
