SASKATCHEWAN RESIDENTS CAN NOW SUPPORT ORGAN DONATION ON HEALTH CARD

Released on September 27, 1996

Health Minister Eric Cline today announced that Saskatchewan Health
will be responsible for the Saskatchewan organ donor identification
initiative.

"The Saskatchewan Health Services card, rather than the provincial
driver's licence, will now be the way that people indicate support for
organ and tissue donation," Cline said. "This is an improvement because
donation is so directly related to the health system in our province.
There will also be greater profile for supporting organ and tissue
donation because the health card is available to all residents, while
the distribution of drivers' licences is less extensive."

This change, supported by SGI and the Saskatchewan Transplant Program
Advisory Committee, will be part of a Health Services card renewal
package going out to Saskatchewan people next month. Validation
stickers extending coverage to Dec. 31, 1999 will be included in the
packages.

"Since we all use these cards to access valuable health benefits, it is
important to keep our cards current and to attach the renewal stickers
to them," Cline said.

Cardholders will also be receiving stickers to indicate their support
for and, participation in, organ and tissue donation.

"The need for organ and tissue donations is urgent and ongoing," said
Fred Casswell, chair of the Saskatchewan Transplant Program Advisory
Committee. "Through a transplant from an organ donor, someone's
quality of life can be greatly improved. Using the Health Services card
to indicate preference will raise awareness about organ and tissue
donation since more people carry Health cards than drivers' licences."
