DAY OF REMEMBRANCE AND ACTION ON VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN

Released on November 26, 1996

Joanne Crofford, minister responsible for the Status of Women, today
announced flags on all provincial government buildings will be lowered
to half mast on Dec. 6.

The flags will be lowered to acknowledge Dec. 6 as the National Day of
Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. This day has been
set aside to commemorate the 14 women who were murdered in an act of
violence against women seven years ago in Montreal.

"Many women's groups and community organizations will be holding events
to recognize this day and call attention to the serious issue of
violence against women," Crofford said. "Individuals can show their
support and commitment to ending violence by participating in one of
the many events being planned for that day.

"The Government of Saskatchewan is committed to finding solutions to
eliminating all forms of violence, as well as providing support to
victims. The Victims Services Program and The Victims of Domestic
Violence Act are examples of the steps government is taking to address
violence against women. But government does not work alone.
Eliminating violence in all its forms must be a collaborative action
involving everyone."
