Released on March 29, 1996
Since January 1994, the federal, provincial and municipal governments
have co-operatively funded 1,813 Canada-Saskatchewan Infrastructure
Works projects, representing an investment of more than $270 million in
Saskatchewan to renew and improve deteriorating local infrastructure,
and generating about 4,500 short-term jobs.
Speaking on behalf of Dr. Jon Gerrard, Secretary of State for Western
Economic Diversification and Minister responsible for implementation of
the infrastructure program in Western Canada, Agriculture and Agri-Food
Minister Ralph Goodale said: "Participation in the infrastructure
program has resulted in an increased level of co-operation between the
federal, provincial and municipal governments, as well as between
Saskatchewan's urban and rural municipalities as everyone works
together to improve the quality of life for Saskatchewan residents.
"Upgrading roads, water treatment plants and municipal facilities keeps
Canada and Saskatchewan competitive while providing needed employment
opportunities," he added.
Saskatchewan Municipal Government Minister Carol Teichrob noted the
tremendous value of this tri-government partnership. "Saskatchewan
cities, towns and villages are being enhanced by these infrastructure
projects, while we also benefit from local job creation and community
economic development."
The Canada-Saskatchewan Infrastructure Works Agreement was signed in
January 1994. The agreement enables Canada, Saskatchewan and
municipalities to co-operatively undertake and fund projects which will
renew and improve the quality of the public infrastructure and create
employment opportunities for Canadians.
Federal funding for the Infrastructure Works Program was provided for
in the March 1996 federal budget as part of the federal government's
prioritized spending program.
