Justice Minister John Nilson today announced the 1996
Saskatchewan Queen's Counsel (QC) appointments.
"I am pleased to see these individuals recognized for their
contributions to the practice of law," Nilson said.
Queen's Counsel is an honourary designation. The 1996
appointments, made by the Lieutenant Governor in Council upon the
recommendation of the minister, are:
Greg Heinrichs of North Battleford, a lawyer with Maher,
Lindgren, Blais and Frank. Heinrichs was admitted to the Saskatchewan bar
in 1981;
Robert Jackson of Saskatoon, a lawyer with the Goldstein,
Jackson
Gibbings law firm. Jackson was admitted to the Saskatchewan bar
in
1979;
Larry LeBlanc of Regina, a lawyer with the MacPherson, Leslie
& Tyerman law firm. LeBlanc was admitted to the Saskatchewan bar
in
1978;
Stanley Loewen of Prince Albert, a lawyer with the Loewen Law
Office.
Loewen was admitted to the Saskatchewan bar in 1979;
Ian McKay of Regina, a lawyer with the Kraus, McKay Pederson
law
firm. McKay was admitted to the Saskatchewan bar in 1972;
Eric Neufeld of Regina, a Crown Prosecutor with Saskatchewan
Justice.
Neufeld was admitted to the Saskatchewan bar in 1975;
Merrilee Rasmussen of Regina, a lawyer with the Wilson
Rasmussen Law
Office. Rasmussen was admitted to the Saskatchewan bar in 1976;
Sidney Robinson of La Ronge, a lawyer with the Saskatchewan
Legal Aid
Commission. Robinson was admitted to the Saskatchewan bar in
1978;
Jane Rooney of Saskatoon, a lawyer with the Hnatyshyn, Singer,
Thorstad law firm. Rooney was admitted to the Saskatchewan bar
in 1980
and is the president of the Saskatchewan Branch of the Canadian
Bar
Association;
Daniel Shapiro of Saskatoon, a lawyer with the firm of
Brayford
Shapiro. Shapiro was admitted to the Saskatchewan bar in 1979;
Norma Sim of Saskatoon, a lawyer with the Saskatchewan Legal
Aid
Commission. Sim was admitted to the Saskatchewan bar in 1975;
Louise Simard of Regina, a lawyer with the MacPherson, Leslie
&
Tyerman law firm. Simard was admitted to the Saskatchewan bar in
1971;
and
R. Shawn Smith of Regina, a lawyer with the McDougall Ready
law firm.
Smith was admitted to the Saskatchewan bar in 1976. He is
president-elect of the Law Society of Saskatchewan and begins his
term Jan. 1, 1997.
Individuals receiving the QC designation have been recommended as
deserving of appointment by a QC selection committee, comprised
of the
Saskatchewan Minister of Justice, the Chief Justice of the Court
of
Queen's Bench for Saskatchewan and the past presidents of the Law
Society of Saskatchewan and the Saskatchewan Branch of the
Canadian Bar
Association.
Appointees must be residents of Saskatchewan and have a minimum
of 10
years entitlement to practice law in the superior courts of any
province or territory or the United Kingdom and Ireland.
