MOOSE JAW WILD ANIMAL PARK SHUTS DOWNS

Released on September 28, 1995

Environment and Resource Management advised the public today that the
Moose Jaw Wild Animal Park has closed.

Failure of the current lessee to obtain the required liability insurance
has left the department no alternative but to terminate the lease
agreement.

Contact with other zoo facilities will begin immediately to discuss
options for care and placement of the animals. In the meantime, the
department will ensure the well-being of the animals.

Over the past eight years, a number of efforts to make a viable business
of the zoo have been made by the private sector. Prior to the current
lessee acquiring the park in the spring of 1994, the park was facing
closure due to financial problems. The province, the City of Moose Jaw
and the newly-formed Moose Jaw Zoological Society agreed at that time to
provide bridge financing to help maintain the facility over the winter
months. This agreement was to allow one last opportunity for the park to
remain open in hopes it would become self-sufficient.

Due to ongoing fiscal restraint, the department is not in a position to
operate the park and will be evaluating options and discussing alternate
uses of the park land with the City of Moose Jaw and other interested
groups.
