Economic Development Minister Dwain Lingenfelter said that StatisticsCanada employment figures released today show that 6,000 more people
were working in April than during the same time last year.
The statistics show an increase from 442,000 people employed in
Saskatchewan in April, 1994, to 448,000 in April, 1995. The province's
unemployment rate of 7.4 per cent is down by 1.5 per cent from a year
ago, with the number of people unemployed down by 7,000.
Lingenfelter said that youth employment, age 15-24, showed a 5,000
increase over the same period a year ago. The unemployment rate for
this age group dropped 2.7 percentage points from April of last year.
"It is very encouraging to see that the economic recovery is opening up
so many opportunities for our province's young people," Lingenfelter
said. "Programs such as JobStart and Future Skills will ensure that
this positive trend continues.
"Several recent announcements such as the decision by Millar Western to
expand its pulp mill in Meadow Lake, of Flexi-Coil Ltd. of Saskatoon to
increase its operational capacity, and of plans to build an oriented
strandboard mill in Hudson Bay will open up hundreds of more jobs in
the coming months."
Lingenfelter said the decision by Northwest Airlines to establish
service in Saskatchewan and to sign an agreement for joint fares with
Athabasca Airlines of Prince Albert for flights to the U.S. is further
demonstration of the confidence felt by the business community for the
benefits of doing business in Saskatchewan.
