Economic Development Minister Dwain Lingenfelter said today that labourforce statistics for February show an increase of 9,000 jobs from the
same time last year.
The statistics released today show an increase from 441,000 persons
employed in Saskatchewan in February, 1994, to 450,000 in February,
1995.
"For the last four months there has been a steady increase in the
number of new jobs," Lingenfelter said. "Our province's unemployment
rate has dropped a full percentage point from last year to 7.4 per cent
-- remaining the lowest in Canada.
"Recent decisions by the Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce to open up
a telephone banking centre in Regina, of Cargill to build a new canola
crushing plant on the outskirts of Saskatoon, the production of an IMAX
film featuring Scotty the T-Rex, and several businesses throughout the
province deciding to expand their operations, will lead to even more
jobs for Saskatchewan people."
Lingenfelter said that a positive business climate which has resulted
from being the first province in Canada to achieve sustainable balanced
budgets and the Saskatchewan government's commitment to effective
education and training programs are some of the reasons for the
continued economic growth the province is experiencing.
