Saskatchewan is taking a collaborative approach to land protection and conservation in Saskatchewan, which involves close collaboration with various ministries, agencies, stakeholders, and First Nation and Métis communities. By working together, we leverage the expertise, resources and established relationships across the province to effectively pursue conservation targets. The approach is informed by international best practices, with the aim to be innovative and flexible through Saskatchewan's tailored strategies, we ensure that conservation efforts support sustainable growth and deliver benefits for all citizens of the province.
As a result of our efforts and to support accountability and transparency, we have established the Protected and Conserved Areas Working Group. This group, consisting of government representatives, works together to identify and implement goals, objectives and actions to support the Protected and Conserved Areas Network, through a unified approach.
The group includes members from the:
- Ministry of Agriculture;
- Ministry of Energy and Resources;
- Ministry of Environment;
- Ministry of Government Relations;
- Ministry of Parks, Culture and Sport; and
- Water Security Agency.
The Ministry of Environment leads the Protected and Conserved Areas Working Group and is the main contact for all proposals and inquiries related to protected and conserved areas in Saskatchewan. Proposals for new or expanded protected and conserved areas should be directed to the Ministry of Environment to ensure a coordinated and comprehensive review process.
