Foraging into the Future 2024: Grazing Forward

The Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture, Swift Current Creek Watershed Stewards and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada are excited to present Foraging Into the Future 2024: Grazing Forward in Swift Current on December 4 and 5, 2024. Join us as we discuss and learn about exciting new research and practices regarding forage and livestock.

Wednesday, December 4

Registration will be open at 9:30 a.m. at the Living Sky Casino in Swift Current, with the program beginning at 10:30 a.m. Brenna Grant from Canfax, will kick the conference off with a livestock market update. Following lunch, we will hear from Jody Horvath from Ducks Unlimited Canada about the basic principles of range management. There will also be a discussion on producer-available tools for forage selection and an update from the Living Labs Central Prairies on current research projects through their organization. To wrap up the day, there will be a producer panel discussion focusing on grazing strategies in action.

Thursday, December 5

Thursday morning will get underway at 9:30 a.m. with a presentation from Dr. Richard Waterman of the U.S. Department of Agriculture on rangeland nutrition for reproduction. Next, we will hear from Dr. Gabriel Ribeiro and Dr. Greg Penner from the University of Saskatchewan on selecting feed efficient cattle. Following lunch, Kathy Larson will speak on the economics of purchasing replacement heifers verses raising your own. The conference will wrap up with Lee Sinclair as the keynote speaker, discussing strategies for low stress cattle handling.
