How a Regional Office Can Help Your Operation

By Chase Dobson, Communications Consultant, Moose Jaw

Did you know the Ministry of Agriculture has 10 regional offices located across the province? These offices are full of specialists who are willing and able to offer advice and support to local farmers and ranchers, producer groups and industry with access to production and business information and services.

Specialists offer a wide range of expertise to help manage any challenges your operation could be facing and identify opportunities:

  • Livestock and feed extension specialists work with livestock producers to increase their productivity and profitability through adoption of new technology, enhanced production practices and marketing options. They offer services such as water testing and assistance with feed testing to ensure your livestock are healthy.
  • Crops extension specialists provide technical expertise in agronomy and highlight the latest research and how it can be applied on-farm. These specialists oversee the Crop Report, lead Crop Diagnostic School every July and support pest surveys throughout the growing season.
  • Agriculture programs specialists provide comprehensive information on programs under the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership (Sustainable CAP) to clients and promote best management practices that build public trust in the industry.
  • Agri-environmental specialists provide leadership and technical expertise for agri-environmental issues and deliver the Resilient Agricultural Landscapes Program through Sustainable CAP. Programming provides funding to help farmers transition to more sustainable agronomic practices to improve long-term competitiveness and sustainability of their operations.
  • Range management extension specialists provide technical expertise in perennial forage and pasture management practices, technologies and promotion of beneficial management practices on Crown and private lands. The team completes range health assessments on Crown land and delivers extension to grazing associations and other clients.

The regional offices are supported by the Agriculture Knowledge Centre, the first point of contact for ministry program and service inquiries for farmers, ranchers and agribusiness clients. Annually, the Agriculture Knowledge Centre and regional offices respond to nearly 12,000 inquiries through telephone, email, text, office visits and farm calls.

Our specialists are focused on providing relevant and timely information for their local region as well as coordinating provincial extension events and webinars. Regional specialists organized or partnered on nearly 60 virtual, in-person and hybrid extension events in 2023-24. For more information on upcoming events and webinars, check out our Agriculture Events Calendar.

In addition, you can find our regional specialists at Saskatchewan’s agricultural shows and industry events including Western Canadian Crop Production Show, Canada’s Farm Show, Ag in Motion, Canadian Beef Industry Conference and Canadian Western Agribition.
