Saskatchewan Celebrates Skilled Trades and Technology Week

Released on October 31, 2016

The Government of Saskatchewan has proclaimed October 31 to November 6 as Skilled Trades and Technology Week.  This proclamation aligns with National Skilled Trades and Technology Week, as well as celebrations happening across the country.

The week kicks off today with a launch event at the Saskatoon Trades and Skills Centre.  The goal of Skilled Trades and Technology Week is to raise the profile of careers in the skilled trades and technology sectors, which is what the Saskatchewan Apprenticeship and Trade Certification Commission (SATCC) and Skills Canada Saskatchewan strive to do as part of their strategic plans, and why the organizations jointly request the week’s proclamation every year.

“The skilled trades and technology fields offer a variety of long, rewarding careers,” Saskatoon Fairview MLA Jennifer Campeau said on behalf of Economy Minister Jeremy Harrison.  “Skilled Trades and Technology Week reminds young people, their parents and the public of the skills training options available for students to achieve their career goals here at home in Saskatchewan.”

“We want people to think of the skilled trades as first-choice career options,” Skills Canada Saskatchewan Chair and SATCC Chief Operating Officer Loreena Spilsted said.  “Skilled Trades and Technology Week raises awareness of everything the skilled trades have to offer.  With more than 40 designated trades in Saskatchewan, there is a multitude of options for people to explore.”

Schools are encouraged to participate in the week by organizing activities and try-a-trade events, and inviting speakers into their classrooms to discuss the benefits of apprenticeship and a career in the skilled trades.

For a full list of suggested school activities, visit the www.skillscanadasask.com homepage.

Teachers and students celebrating Skilled Trades and Technology Week can post photos of their activities to the Facebook pages of Skills Canada Saskatchewan (Skills Canada Saskatchewan) and the SATCC (Sask Apprenticeship).  They are encouraged to use the hashtag #sttwsk16 when posting to social media.

“I am thrilled that the Saskatoon Trades and Skills Centre is helping to launch Skilled Trades and Technology Week in Saskatchewan,” Saskatoon Trades and Skills Centre Executive Director Donavon Elliott said.  “Skilled tradespeople provide quality services to the people of Saskatchewan, and in doing so, enhance our citizens’ quality of life.  That’s something worth recognizing and celebrating, and Skilled Trades and Technology Week is a platform to do just that.”

Other events happening across Saskatchewan during Skilled Trades and Technology week include:

  • Wednesday, November 2: Try-a-trade event at Campus Regina Public, in partnership with the Regina Industry Education Council, 10 a.m.—3 p.m.
  • Wednesday, November 2: Try-a-trade event at the Saskatoon Trades and Skills Centre, 10 a.m.—3 p.m.
