The Government of Saskatchewan has signed a new 2016 Agreement Respecting Multi-Jurisdictional Pension Plans (2016 Agreement) which continues to protect plan member entitlements, and provides a clear legal framework for the administration and regulation of multi-jurisdictional pension plans.
“It’s important that there is clarity regarding which law applies to pension entitlements for pension plans which have members both in Saskatchewan and in other provinces,” Justice Minister and Attorney General Gordon Wyant said.
The 2016 Agreement between Saskatchewan, British Columbia, Nova Scotia, Ontario and Quebec comes into effect July 1, 2016. The previous decade’s old agreement still remains in place between Saskatchewan and those jurisdictions which did not sign the 2016 Agreement. A multi-jurisdictional plan is one that provides pension benefits to employees of an employer which operates in more than one province.
