Consumer Alert - Vehicle Dealer Operating Without a License
Released on July 6, 2016
The Financial and Consumer Affairs Authority (FCAA) has received information indicating that Kyle Martin of Marty Auto Sales, also known as “Marty’s Auto Sales” is operating as an unlicensed vehicle dealer in Humboldt.
Martin had previously been directed to cease auto sales activities by the FCAA’s Consumer Protection Division.
It is an offense to be in the business of selling vehicles without a vehicle dealer licence. Unlicensed vehicle sales are referred to as “curbing” due to the practice of displaying vehicles with “For Sale” signs on the side of the road.
Consumers are warned that buying a vehicle from an unlicensed dealer is a higher-risk activity. There are specific warranties and legislative protections offered by the Vehicle Dealer Regulations under The Consumer Protection and Business Practices Act that do not apply to private sales.
